Plans to extend The Rusacks Hotel, St Andrews were given the green light over the weekend which will see £7 million invested into the iconic venue which overlooks the famous Old Course.
Owners Macdonald Hotels will add an additional 44 rooms, restaurant and rooftop balcony to the four star lodgings which backs onto the most lucrative street in golf, The Links and overlooks the amphitheatre of the Old Course.
The hotel statement read;
“We are planning to invest £7million in this development, with 44 spacious suites range from 350 – 475 sq ft and a rooftop restaurant for 145 diners. The restaurant, bar and 1,050 sq ft roof terrace will all offer spectacular views over the Old Course and the West Sands, additions which we are sure will achieve ‘5 Red Star’ status for the Macdonald Rusacks Hotel.”
Unsurprisingly a popular spot for visiting golfers, the news will come as welcomed news to anyone who dares Google the phrase ‘St Andrews Hotels‘ and soon discovers the limited and VERY expensive hotel accommodation in the town. A standard double room here will set you back £365. That said as I often note on the podcast location is key when planning your trip. For me being in the town of St Andrews is a must. The extension of the hotel on the site of the current car park will for many is well over due.
The news wasn’t welcomed by all however with some questioning the visual impact on the historic skyline which frames the Old Course the 14th tee, teasing you until the finish. While a valid argument the recent developments to Hamilton Grand, the large building behind the 18th green and the recent extension to the British Golf Museum to the left of the Royal & Ancient clubhouse were examples of recent modifications and evolution of the St Andrews skyline.
The hotel will now enter the final planning process and have scheduled work for the 2016 season.
