Episode 86 – The Battle To Save Golf’s Oldest 19th Hole

One of golf’s most historic venues is no longer as golf’s longest running bar Mrs Forman’s, Musselburgh is set for demolition.

Neil Laird of Scottish Golf History who broke the story revealed the closure of the pub and the lodged plans to council for future housing developments on site.

“Mrs Forman’s hostelry, which has been serving golfers at Musselburgh for almost 200 years has closed and will be converted into houses. It may even be demolished.”

Forman’s located just off the back edge of the 4th green at Old Musselburgh Links has played host to many famous names in golf from local hero Willie Park during big money matches with Old Tom Morris to the great Bobby Jones and remains a popular stop on golfing visits to Scotland.

So what next?

When checking the several planning application lodged to East Lothian Council for the developments of Mrs Forman’s they all appear to be pending consideration and with the exception of the change of use application all are restricted from public view??

As we await news for those less informed (myself included) make a point of watching back Geoff Shackelford’s video below and reading his 2013 Golf Digest article on the historical importance of Old Musselburgh Links.
