Host Ru Macdonald is joined by New York golfer Mike Altobello who just returned from a buddies golf trip in and around North Berwick. Apart from providing a transparent account of his trip, Mike shares with us a host of practical advice which he assures us will form the basis of his next trip to Scotland.
The group headed straight to their base for the week, North Berwick. After learning from a recent Irish golf trip the decision was made to try and find a central location instead of feeling like they were continually on the road moving from hotel to hotel, course to course. The rented property on the street overlooking the beach in the heart of North Berwick gave the group a spacious lodging within walking distance of North Berwick West Links.
The 1 week trip to Scotland was the first for the group. After volunteering at this year’s Walker Cup at Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club the Scottish golf trip would include rounds at Dunbar, North Berwick, Gullane No 1 & No. 2 and The Renaissance Club. After a total of three rounds at North Berwick the group felt that if possible in the future they would benefit from at least two rounds at every course to try appreciate the subtleties in each course while benefiting from a little local knowledge the second time round.
The group enjoyed meeting the locals and getting a grasp on the Scottish golf culture. Two of the foursome would take caddies at every course allowing the group to hear the folklore of each club. With most the caddies living locally you’re as likely to bump into them off the course like the group discovered in North Berwick’s local deli bakery!
Mike shared the surprised satisfaction himself and his friends took from playing the lesser known courses like Dunbar and Gullane No.1 & No.2. When asked about his next trip Mike explained the guys are relishing the chance to discover the perceived 2nd and 3rd tier courses.
